Welcome!

Welcome to the SHS Eco-warriors blog page.

Here at Sheffield High School students have a genuine passion for reducing our impact on the environment, on both a local and global scale. To do this, our group of eco-warriors, comprising of sixth formers and teachers, has implemented many initiatives, which ensure the school is as environmentally friendly as possible.

The group was established in 2008 and has since grown, both in numbers and in our plans for the school. One of the group’s early initiatives was to appoint each form with an eco-rep, whose job it is to encourage their fellow students to follow the Eco-Code, as shown below:

SHS Eco Code
In our efforts to make SHS a greener environment, we ask that all of you do your bit, by following these simple rules:

· Don’t waste paper. Rule off after each piece of work
· Switch off classroom lights when not in use
· Always switch off computer screens after use
· Switch off computers at the end of the day
· Don’t litter
· Recycle all paper

The Eco-Warriors then set their sights on paper recycling, setting up bins in every classroom for waste paper, which is now recycled regularly. Hippos have been installed in all toilet cisterns, ensuring minimal water-wastage. Where possible, regular light bulbs have been replaced with energy-efficient bulbs. The school has also changed its energy supplier, to a company using only renewable energy sources. These initiatives have enabled the school to attain its Bronze and Silver Eco-Schools Award, as well as the Sheffield Telegraph Environment Award.

But the eco-warriors work is not yet done! There are many projects currently underway to further reduce the schools impact on the environment. The new sixth-form extension has been designed to be as green as possible. Plastic recycling facilities are gradually being introduced and students are working with the neighbouring nursing home to recycle residents’ waste. Litter picks along Melbourne Avenue are soon to be a regular occurrence and the eco-font, which uses 20% less ink when printed, will hopefully be available on all the schools computers. Eco-Day will make an annual appearance, encouraging all students to behave in a more environmentally-friendly manner. We hope that these actions, and more, will help the school to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, so to keep up with our progress with this, follow this blog page.
